From Butter to Ballet, Port to Fort and various forms of transport the senior class in Scoil Cnoc na Manach, in Minane Bridge have been working on their Discover Cork Projects for almost three months and have researched, interviewed and paid onsite visits to most venues and have produced models and projects of major interest.
On completion of their work, the children invited other students from the school to view their work, while they informed them of the interesting information they had learned. Special thanks to several members of the Men’s Shed in Carrigaline who came to the school to be interviewed on Camden Fort and The Railway Walk.
This year the defense forces took prominence; involved in four out of the nine projects. Both Charles Fort and Camden Fort were chosen; along with two strong teams who studied Haulbowline, encouraging each other to do their best and producing a very high standard between them. Cork City Jail, the Firkin Crane and Cobh were also very interesting topics. Farming and the Railways of Cork completed the topics.
Each team will enter the competition in which last year 50 schools took part in the City and County; with 1,500 students submitting over 400 projects on all aspects of Cork’s past. Now in it’s 13th year and going from strength to strength the Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project is co-ordinated by well-known Cork historian Cllr Kieran McCarthy. The project seeks to encourage students to explore the origins of Cork and engage interactively with their surroundings in searching for the answers to the who, what and why that make up Cork’s rich heritage.
Congratulations to involved and huge thanks to the parents who have supported them on their journey of discovery.
