On March 15th Ireland celebrated it’s inaugural Proclamation Day. Every school in the country received a national flag and copy of the proclamation.
A large number of parents turned up to partake in the historical celebrations. The proceeding started off with Barry Murphy piping through the guard of honour, made up of junior infants, senior infants and first classes, followed by two junior infants carrying the flag.
Second class students unfolded the flag and Mr. O’ Callaghan hoisted it up our new flag poll.
Chloe Murphy told us about the meaning and colours of the flag. Then girls from our senior class read the proclamation followed by seven boys who intruduced themselves as the seven signatories and told us a little about each one.
Some of third class wrote their own up-to-date proclamation, which they read with pride, while the rest of them read a letter written from an eye witness to the rising itself, Honora Costigan, a great grandaunt of our very own Sally Whyte. Second class then read a roll call of the seven past pupils of the Knocknamanagh School who were involved in the rising.
We finished this part of the ceremony with everyone singing Amhrán na bhFiann.
Parents were then invited back to the senior classroom to a short concert with members of the Scór team leading the choir of 4th to 6th. Conor O’ Connell our music teacher accompanied them on his guitar. Solo singing, instrumental, ballad singing and recitation were followed by 4th class singing themselves and a group song to finish. The History of Ireland Rap concluded proceedings.
Many parents then stayed for tea and cakes provided by the parents association. Much attention was given to the black and white photos of the class along with the one hundred year old coin given on loan to the school by Denis O’ Mahony. A 50 year commemoration coin was also brought in by the Lyons family.
A ceilí for the rest of the school followed class by class. A great and memorable day was had by all.
